Apurva Singh: How easy is it for a technical professional, from a core electronics background, to go on a Product Development or Program Management path?
Rajul Garg: Product Development and Program Management are 2 very different roles.
From a product development perspective, you may want to understand the product eco-system. Either consumer products or IOT products will be easier for you to relate to.
On the other hand, program management requires more business skills, leadership and operational excellence.
Hence, its a 3 step process:
Understand this ecosystem
You need to understand the ecosystem of your field, where you stand in it and what will it take to succeed. Ecosystem includes all players including end consumers. You can’t own a product unless you understand all stakeholders.
Develop Business Perspective
Do you know what makes your business successful? This is much harder than you think. What are the right metrics for your business? This also requires you to get the big picture view correctly.
Network and Go for opportunities
Once you feel you are doing decently well on first 2 steps, its time to go and network. Creating opportunities is an art and the first step is to simply increase your network. Don’t shy away from talking to your senior management, understanding what they need to get into program management in core electronics itself.
