Atish Chakraborty:I am a C/C++ application developer, working in a maintenance and support role, also doing PGPM from Sunstone. Is this the right time to switch to a different technology ? Of course, after completing PGPM I want to switch to a business focused role.
Dheeraj Garg: Taking a decision on shifting technologies is a function of multiple parameters such as your expertise level, role and current relevance of the technology in the market. If you have spent substantial years in one area, have deep expertise and market still has high demand for it, there is not much value in moving away from it. If you are at an architect level, it will be worthwhile to get exposure to different technologies, though it is not really shifting.
On the other hand, if you are working on an obsolete tech like mainframe and have yet not moved to management or business role, it would make perfect sense to shift into upcoming technologies.
However, if you have already decided to move into business role, there is not much point in investing your time learning new technologies. It would make more sense to work on the newer skills and find opportunities to practice them
